'King William I' - known as ‘William the Conqueror’
First Norman ruler
William saw Haley’s comet in April 1066, from the French coast and regarded it as a sign from heaven to invade England. Haley’s comet is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry.

William is best known for his victory at the Battle of Hastings -14th October 1066.
William built The White Tower (Tower of London) in 1078, and Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world – burial place of 10 sovereigns.
William commissioned the Domesday Book, survey of England to assess the country’s wealth and assets. This was the first public record of England.
In 1079, William demolished the old cathedral in Winchester and began the construction of the present Norman Cathedral. Winchester is a town rich in history, it was King Alfred the Great, who made Winchester the capital of England.

It was William who introduced beheading by sword rather than axe (England).
